For this assignment, I chose a topic area of Mental Health and Burn-out of Nursing Students. This is of interest to me because I work directly with undergraduate nursing students and I am seeing first hand the increased stress, emotional turmoil, and mental health issues in them during their time in the nursing program. I utilized the Walden University Library to start my research. I used EBSCO Discovery Service to find my article. When I refined my journal search, I ensured that it was peer reviewed, written within the past 5 years, and that it had a full text article option. Peer reviewed means that it is “a scholarly form of review used by journals only for journal articles. After an article is sent to an academic journal, the editor sends it to several peer reviewers for evaluation (Walden University Library, n.d). Peer reviewers will provide their feedback, conclusions, note any flaws or bias, and can require edits, re-writes, acceptance or rejection of the article (Walden University Library, n.d).

Engelbrecht and M. Wilke. This article was interesting to me because it dug into the burnout of nursing students, academic and life stressors, coping mechanisms, and overall professional quality of life (Engelbrecht & Wilke, 2021, p. 140-141). It was interesting to read through the correlation of academic stressors and environmental factors that are contributing to high nursing student burnout, like “high patient loads, insufficient resources, long working hours, lack of professional knowledge and skills and unclear roles and responsibilities” (Engelbrecht & Wilke, 2021).
Once I navigated through the EBSCO portal, I was more familiar with the research options and how to utilize the system. Initially, I was a bit confused on how to search through the database, but with some clicking I was able to find what I was looking for. EBSCO provides a variety of different research materials, such as evidence-based clinical decision support, peer-reviewed health journals, and healthcare related blogs (EBSCO, 2022). I believe this database would be super helpful to all of you because it has a large array of topic areas that it searches through. It brought up lots of materials to look through and I found it super helpful to find what I was looking for!
