The Future of the Field

Technology is a trend that is impacting the law enforcement profession. Technology has been a trending issue affecting multiple disciplines and professions. In law enforcement, there has been a trend in the increase in the use of technology and tool. Technology is making major strides and it is making things much easier for law enforcement professionals. Technology has ensured and improved security and safety by enabling proactive policing and creating transparency in the law enforcement departments (Silberglitt et al 2015). Technology has significant positive impacts nevertheless it also has some negative impacts.

Social media which is a major milestone in technology has impacted law enforcement greatly. Law enforcement has been using social media in gathering information on suspects and victims and also in engaging and interacting with the communities (Fritsvold, 2013). Through information gathered through social media, cases have been solved with some suspect being exonerated. Additionally, the body cameras worn by law enforcement especially the police is as a result of technology. The body cams won by multiple agencies have played a major role in decreasing the number of complaints filed against police force increasing the level of transparency since it makes it impossible and difficult for law enforcement or the citizens to fabricate incidences and evidence.

On the other hand, law enforcement has advanced to using a GPS application. GPS is a product of technology whereby law enforcement uses them to track and locate suspects and victims faster. Some trackers and bullets can be attached to vehicles and then they are tracked to show the location of the car. Phones and other electronics also are known to have GPS attached to them which makes them easy to locate and track. This GPS is also used to gather evidence by following up on locations of suspects whereby some do have listening devices attached to them. “GPS tracking devices can be used on repeat offenders to monitor their location” (Fritsvold, 2013). Drones are also a product of technology. Law enforcement has used drone technology mostly for surveillance as they are flown on air without the awareness of the suspect. The drones have cameras that transmit what’s in their aerial view which makes it easy for law enforcement to gather evidence and follow up on suspects and illegal activities being carried out.
