A career I hope to Follow

After deep thoughts and reflections, I came to the conclusion that I would like to be a school counsellor. A career that I hold it dear and passionate about helping the students rediscover their path, and improve on their behaviours. The role of a counsellor is to help the others resolve social and emotional problems while remaining focused to better their class performance. Hence, I have chosen this career because I can assist the students to be on the right track academically and helping them to better personal and social wellbeing.

In choosing to be a school counsellor I can assist the students to be focused on their classwork. In my present position as a class teacher, I find that so many students are in desperate need of someone to converse with and assist them with their daily struggles in life.  For example, I had a student who was being very disruptive in class and exhibit many behavioural issues. However, after speaking to that student I realize that there was a need for her to experience academic success. At this point, I was able to offer support by assisting her with homework and whatever else needed to be done. I will be able to help her resolve some of these problems and ensure that students will be able to experience success academically.

 Moreover, as a future school counsellor, I would be able to help the students to improve on their academic performance by learning new techniques that have been proven to be vital class performance. I would also play a critical role in improving personal and social development in student’s lives.  There are students who are also affected by family problems back at home, and it would be my role as a counsellor to help them cope with it and ensure that it does not affect their social and academic performance.  I will also help students who are facing various challenges such as being bullied at school and family problems such as death or divorce. This can be done by offering individual counselling that will help students resolve personal problems such as these. Additionally, small group counselling can be done to help students who have various challenges and listening to their personal problems. I will also help to form healthy peer group that would be concerned with students’ welfare.

 I recognize that to accomplish my dream I must attain a university education.   A degree in school counselling and psychology will give an edge in the competitive workforce. My services would be needed in helping the students cope with drug menace that has been a challenge to many learning institutions Nelson Mandela stated that education is crucial in bringing change in the world. Therefore, a career of this magnitude has the potential to change lives positively and for that reason, I need to be equipped with the experience, skills and knowledge needed to achieve the task at hand.  I will choose to seize any opportunities that can help advance my future career as a school counsellor.

         In conclusion, my overall passion is to help students improve their academic and social lives. As a classroom teacher, I see so many issues students have to deal with on a daily basis.  Some students are able to survive many difficulties and challenges because they had someone to communicate with.  However, the unfortunate ones, could either drop out of school or even become criminals.  A school counsellor is a career that can make a difference in the lives of students and one I intend to pursue with a passion.
